Natural and climatic conditions

The climatic conditions of the region are very diverse and variegated, which is due to the vastness of the territory, a considerable length from north to south and even greater from west to east, as well as the rugged terrain.
The climate of the region is sharply continental, dry. A high degree of continentality is manifested in large annual and daily temperature amplitudes and in the instability of climatic indicators over time (from year to year). Summer in the region is very hot, and in the south sultry and long. The air temperature in the summer sometimes rises to 40-48 ° C; winter is cold, frosts sometimes reach up to 40-45 ° С. On average, the duration of the warm period (with an average daily air temperature above 0 °) varies over the territory of the region from 200 (in the northeast) to 240 days (in the south).
The annual rainfall in the region varies from 130 mm to 310 mm or more. Precipitation of the warm period (IV-X) in the northeast of the region is estimated at an average of 200-270 mm, and in the desert zone only 65-80 mm.
On a larger territory, the average annual wind speed is 2.0 - 4.4 m / s. The prevailing wind direction in the plains of the southern half of the region is eastern and northeastern, in the northeastern part of the territory is southwestern and southern.
Natural and climatic zones are represented by steppe, semi-desert and desert landscape zones of the temperate zone. The steppe landscape zone includes the territories of Nurinsky, Osakarovsky, Bukhar-Zhyrau and Karkaraly districts. Chestnut soils and small areas of low humus southern chernozems predominate. In the central parts, some elements of high-altitude landscape zonality are manifested. In granite massifs of low mountains on highly gravelly dark-colored soils, birch-pine forests are found. The most common landscapes include floodplain meadows, solonetzes, and solonchaks with desert steppe and meadow-solonchak vegetation. The steppe zone is characterized by a dry sharply continental climate: summers are hot and dry, winters are not snowy, but severe with winds and snowstorms.
Evaporation over the summer period exceeds precipitation by 3-7 times. Sharp continentality is determined by harsh winters, high summer temperatures, large annual and daily amplitudes of air temperature and a small amount of precipitation.
The semi-desert landscape zone includes the territories: Abay, the northern part of Zhanaarkinsky, Shet and Aktogaysky, the southern part of Nurinsky and Karkaraly districts. The indicated zone is characterized by a dry and sharply continental climate, light-chestnut and brown soils poor in humus, prevalence of solonetzes and solonchaks, wormwood and grass on the lowland areas of the relief. Low mountains and hills in the semi-desert zone are covered with roughly skeletal gravelly soils with fescue-wormwood bushes.
The desert landscape zone includes the territories of the central, south-eastern and south-western parts of the Ulytau, Zhanaarka, Shet and Aktogai regions. The desert zone is characterized by an arid climate, very low rainfall and water supply, high volatility, significant daily and annual fluctuations in air and soil temperature, the absence of constant surface watercourses, the accumulation of salts in the upper horizons of the soil, and sparse vegetation.
The fauna of the region is very diverse, there are about 70 species of mammals, 205 species of birds, 13 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians and over 20 species of fish.
